What do you need to successfully launch and manage your own interior design company? Graduate Enock Robin Turcotte revealed his secrets during a seminar at Inter-Dec College.
A successful graduate of LaSalle College’s E-learning school in Interior Design, he has made a name for himself as co-host of Bye-Bye Maison and Chic Shack, two popular TV shows.
On June 12, the self-starter shared his expertise at Inter-Dec College, where entrepreneurship is an integral part of the curriculum.
Students from Inter-Dec College’s Interior Design program were in attendance, as well as over 70 students from LaSalle College’s E-learning school. They watched the talk remotely, through Adobe Connect.
How to become a good interior designer
“The world of interior design changes constantly. What is popular one day will be out of fashion the next!”
To be a good interior designer, according to Enock Robin, you have to stay on top of the latest trends. It’s crucial to stay informed and never stop learning.
But that’s not all—when interviewing candidates, the highly passionate designer also looks for commitment, creativity and heart.
Having a strong portfolio is a must to increase your credibility: “Start by redoing your aunt’s bathroom and your cousin’s kitchen. Get some experience and show your client what you can do.”
Building credibility is also done through networking. It’s a great way of getting yourself known in the industry. According to Enock Robin, you have to surround yourself with people who share your passion and interact with professionals.
He didn’t hesitate to talk about some basics that young professionals often overlook: the benefits of registering or incorporating your business, how to draft a quote, the importance of a budget, what hourly rate to charge for a beginner designer, and much more.
Thank you, Enock Robin, for sharing your experience with so much enthusiasm and generosity!
